아메리카를 상징하는 인기 스포츠이자 미국의 연례 최대 스포츠 행사인 슈퍼볼(Super Bowl) 개막이 3일 앞으로 다가왔습니다. 이번 제51회 슈퍼볼은 오는 2월5일 미국 텍사스주 휴스턴 NRG 스타디움에서 '뉴잉글랜드 패트리어츠' vs '애틀랜타 팰컨스' 대결로 펼쳐집니다. 슈퍼볼은 미국인뿐만 아니라 세계인의 이목이 집중되는 스포츠 행사이다 보니 본경기뿐만 아니라 광고나 공연 등에 대해서도 덩달아 화제를 모으게 됩니다. 올해는 레이디 가가(Lady GaGa)가 스타디움 지붕에서 내려오는 깜짝 퍼포먼스를 선보일 예정이라고 해서 잔뜩 기대하고 있습니다. 퍼포머(연예인)들도 슈퍼볼에서 공연하는 것을 가문의 영광으로 여길 만큼 슈퍼볼 무대는 무척 특별하다 하겠습니다. 특히 제가 가장 인상깊게 본 공연은 1993년 제27회 대회의 마이클 잭슨 공연과 위의 1991년 제25회 대회의 휘트니 휴스턴 공연입니다. 마이클 잭슨 공연은 차후에 다루기로 하고, 이번에는 휘트니 휴스턴의 슈퍼볼 퍼포먼스에 대해 다뤄볼까 합니다.

91년 슈퍼볼에서 휘트니 휴스턴은 흰색 상하의 트레이닝복과 헤드밴드, 스니커즈를 착용하고 나와 미국의 애국가인 스타 스팽글드 배너(Star Spangled banner)를 열창합니다. 그의 폭발적인 성량과 가창력은 듣는이를 전율케 하기 충분합니다. 이후에도 숱한 가수들이 슈퍼볼 무대에 서 '스타 스팽글드 배너'을 선보여왔지만, 휘트니의 퍼포먼스에 버금가는 공연은 현재까지도 전무, 앞으로도 후무하다 하겠습니다. 사실상 이 공연은 전설이 됐습니다. 영상미도 압권입니다. 영상을 통해 미국이라는 나라의 진면목과 팍스 아메리카나(Pax Americana)를 가감없이 볼 수 있습니다. 보는이로 하여금 자연스럽게 애국심을 불러일으키게 할 만큼 잘 만들어진 영상입니다. 영상에는 슈퍼볼에 참전하는 양팀 선수들, 성조기를 흔드는 미국 시민들, 조국을 지키기 위해 헌신하는 군기가 바짝 든 군인들의 모습 등과 더불어 열창하는 휘트니의 모습이 오버랩되며 자연스레 고양감을 고취시킵니다. 아울러 영상 말미에 등장하는 아레나 상공을 통과하는 전투기들은 퍼포먼스의 화룡점정입니다. 하나부터 열까지 준비 된 모든 게 완벽히 선보여진 소름돋는 세기의 퍼포먼스라 하겠습니다. 앞으로도 휘트니 휴스턴의 버전을 뛰어넘을 퍼포먼스가 과연 나올 수 있을지가 궁금합니다.

슈퍼볼 하면 공연 말고도 관심가는 것이 또 하나 있습니다. 바로 슈퍼볼의 광고 얘기입니다. 이 또한 미국인들의 최대 관심사 중 하나입니다. 도널드 트럼프 대통령이 취임한 올해 슈퍼볼 방송 주관사는 보수성향으로 알려진 폭스사로 선정됐습니다. 국내 기업 가운데서는 현대차가 올해 경기 종료 직후 파병부대를 소재로 한 기업브랜드 영상광고를 내보낼 계획이라고 전해집니다. 트럼프 대통령이 지난 달 취임하며 미국은 아메리카 퍼스트(America First) 즉 미국우선주의로 급속히 선회하는 모양새입니다. 이에 따라 현대차는 미국이라는 탐나는 소비시장에서 도태되지 않을까 안절부절입니다. 트럼프 대통령의 반 협박성 요구에 의해 미국 내 현대차 공장을 추가 건설하기로 방침을 정했지만, 트럼프 대통령이 또 어떤 무리한 요구를 해올지는 장담할 수 없는 노릇입니다. 지금까지의 트럼프 대통령의 행보를 보건대, 미국 기업을 제외한 미국 내 국외기업들은 트럼프정부 집권 내내 눈치를 살피며 흙길 신세를 면치 못할 것으로 전망됩니다. 트럼프 대통령도 당연히 이번 슈퍼볼을 관전할 것으로 예상됩니다. 현대차의 이번 슈퍼볼 기업광고가 트럼프의 마음에 쏙 들어서 아무쪼록 트럼프정권 집권 기간 동안 부당한 대우를 받지 않게 되기를 바랍니다. 한편 기아차는 이번 슈퍼볼 3쿼터 시작 전에 신차 '니로' 제품광고를 내보내기로 했습니다.

슈퍼볼은 본경기만큼이나 어떤 퍼포먼스와 광고가 나올지 기다려지게 하는 마력의 스포츠 행사입니다. 올해는 또 어떤 스타가 탄생하게 될까요. 벌써 3일 앞으로 다가온 제51회 슈퍼볼. 개막일이 기다려집니다.
