혁명 이후 개인의 자유를 갈망하는 프랑스 민중. 혁명이 낳은 시대의 자식, 그를 일컫는 말 '보헤미안'. 19세기 말부터 20세기 초에 이르는 당시 예술가, 지식인 층을 중심으로 이뤄진 보헤미안 혁명. 영화 물랑루즈는 보헤미안 혁명 시기인 1899년을 시대배경으로 한다. 장소는 21C 현재도 예술가들의 사랑을 받고 있는 프랑스 파리 북부 '몽마르뜨'. 혁명세대의 아들 딸, 보헤미안들이 자유와 예술을 향해 몽마르뜨로 몰려든다. 물랑루즈의 남주(남자주인공), 작가 지망 크리스티앙도 자유로운 창작을 갈망하며 이곳으로 흘러든다. '빨간 풍차'라는 의미의 '물랑루즈'는 파리 몽마르뜨에 위치한 환락가로, 지상 최고의 화려하고 퇴폐적인 쇼를 자랑한다. 그곳의 창부이자 솔리스트, 반짝이는 다이아몬드로 불리는 여주 샤틴은 환락가의 여왕이 아닌 '여배우'로서 명성을 날릴 기회만 기다리고 있다. 어느 날, 자신의 꿈을 이뤄 줄 스폰서, 공작이 물랑루즈에 찾아왔는데... 샤틴은 크리스티앙을 공작으로 착각하고 그를 유혹한다. 그렇게 시작된 신출내기 작가와 환락가 여왕 샤틴의 만남과 사랑 그리고 운명. 샤틴은 자신의 꿈과 사랑 중 하나를 선택해야만 하는 순간이 다가오는데.
