<Moana(모아나)> Official Trailer(공식 예고편)
디즈니 애니메이션 영화 <모아나(Moana)> 보셨나요? "역시 디즈니(Disney)!"라는 말이 나올 만한 수작이었습니다. 디즈니는 정말 '장인정신'이 투철한 제작사라고 생각합니다. 요소요소마다 디즈니의 장인들이 섬세하게 매만진 흔적이 묻어납니다. 영상이며 삽입곡이며. 그러니 그에 대한 저작권에 그렇게나 집착을 보이는 것이겠지요. 물론 좋은 의미에서의 집착입니다. 그 정도의 노력과 정성을 기울였다면 응당 그에 걸맞은 권리도 함께 보장 받아야 한다고 봅니다.
영화 <모아나>는 스토리, 영상, 철학 등이 전부 훌륭했습니다. 영화 곳곳에 삽입한 배경음악도 주옥같았지요. 한편 디즈니의 2013년 개봉작 <겨울왕국(Frozen)>이 한국에서 희대의 신드롬을 일으키며 큰 인기를 얻은 것과 비견되게, <모아나>의 국내 흥행은 예상했던 것보다는 썩 좋지 않았습니다. 생각해보면 디즈니의 작품 치고 완성도나 작품성 면에서 <겨울왕국>은 가장 떨어지는 작품 가운데 하나였다고 생각하는데, 역설적이게도 흥행면에서는 대성공을 거두었습니다. 겨울왕국의 국내 대히트는 오직 '렛잇고(Let It Go)'의 힘이었다고 봐도 무방하지 않을 것 같습니다.
개인적으로는 영화 삽입곡도 <모아나>가 <겨울왕국>과 견주어 보다 뛰어났다고 봅니다만, 국내에서는 화제를 불러모으지 못 합니다. 무엇이 부족했던 것일까요? 북방계 '백인(White)'에 유독 집착하는 경향의 한국사회에서는 남방계 폴리네시아(Polynesia) 인종을 모티브한 문화상품은 애초부터 흥행의 한계가 있었던 걸까요?
국내 사정과는 달리 <모아나>는 해외 미국에서 큰 인기를 구가했습니다. 아래 영상은 <모아나>의 메인 주제곡 '하우 파 아윌 고(How Far I'll Go, Ft. Auli'i Cravalho)'의 라이브 공연 장면입니다. 그 이름도 유명한 '아카데미 시상식'에서의 공연을 일주일 앞두고 오케스트라와 함께 공연한 영상입니다. 아카데미 시상식에서 공연할 정도면 얼마나 화제가 됐는지 긴 말이 필요 없을 것 같습니다. 피쳐링에 참여한 하와이(Hawaii) 출신 아울리이 크러발리호(16)는 <모아나>를 발판삼아 서구권에서 인기스타로 발돋움했습니다.
아울리이 크러발리호는 음색이 참 청아하고 좋습니다. 고음영역에서는 다소 불안정한 감이 있습니다만, 조금 더 다듬으면 제2의 레아 살롱가(Lea Salonga)라는 찬사를 받을 날이 오지 않을까 하는 다소 과한(?) 기대를 품어 보게 하는 신예입니다. 아울리이는 디즈니가 사랑한 디바 레아 살롱가의 음색과 닮은 점이 많습니다. 디즈니가 참 좋아할 만한 음색입니다. 무척 디즈니스럽습니다. 틴에이저 아울리이 크러발리호의 앞으로의 행보가 기대를 모으는 이유입니다. 그의 활약을 기대해봅니다.
한편 아울리이는 <모아나>에 참여하지 못 할 뻔한 사연이 전해져 눈길을 모았습니다. 디즈니가 워낙 대단한 제작사이다 보니 앞서 수많은 지원자가 오디션에 몰려들었고, 아울리이는 <모아나> 오디션에 지원할 엄두를 내지 못 했다고 합니다. 그러던 중 오아후 캐스팅 에이전트(Oahu casting agent)의 권유로 마지막 오디션 참가자로 이름을 올리게 됐고, 마침내 디즈니의 새 장편 애니메이션영화 <모아나>의 주인공 '모아나' 역 캐스팅 발탁에 성공했다고 합니다.
