서태지가 그 시작이었다. 오래전 일이라 기억은 흐릿하지만, 초등학교 시절 공중파 한 프로그램에는 매주 신인가수 루키들을 두세명(팀)씩 소개해주는 코너가 있었다. 그때 그 프로에 등장한 신인그룹 '서태지와 아이들'.
20세기 대한민국 가요 문화사에 영원히 기록될 결정적 한 획을 그은 역사적 현장. 일필로 형용할 수 없는 놀라움의 극치. 지금 생각해봐도 소름이 가시지 않는다. 이때부터였던 듯하다. 음악에 대한 갈증이 생기기 시작했던 건.

시간이 많이 흘러 기억은 흐릿하지만 그날의 감동은 아직도 생생하다. 음악도 모르는 코흘리개 꼬마 눈에 비친 브라운관 속 세 청년. 빠른 비트와 현란한 춤사위, "오, 그대여 가지 마세요"라며 애절한 가사를 들려주던 귀공자 같은 외모의 서태지.
그리고 당시 춤의 진수를 보여주던 양현석과 이주노. 당시 기성음악계를 대표하는 평가단은 이들의 새로운 스타일을 높이 사진 않았다. 그런데 방송 다음날부터 시작된 서태지 신드롬.
"너, 그거 봤어?"
발매하는 음악마다 새로움과 놀라움, 환희로 가득찼던 그때 그 시절의 그 감동.

발표한 앨범마다 공전의 히트를 넘어 시대의 아이콘, 트렌드가 되고 소녀떼를 몰고 다니며 숱한 사회적 반향을 불러일으키던 서태지와 아이들. '문화대통령'이라는 수식어만큼 이들에게 잘 어울리는 별명도 없었다. 그렇게 '서태지와 아이들'은 나의 초등학교 시절과 중학교 초반의 기억을 그들의 음악으로 가득 물들였다.

이후 시작된 아이돌 그룹 음악 전성시대. 갈 곳 잃은 나의 귀는 중학교 벗이 빌려준 '맥스(MAX)'를 접하며 새로운 음악 세계로 빨려든다. '찰칵' 파나소닉 카세트에 밀어넣은 맥스2집. 이어폰으로 흘러 나오던 신세계.

당시에는 어떤 가수인지도 모르고 테이프 늘어질 때까지 들었던 앨범 목록. 지금 보니 팝계의 전설들이 한자리에 있다. 당시 히트곡들만 엮어 발매하던 맥스. 아련한 추억. 그렇게 나의 중3 시절을 맥스 2집과 함께 했다.

그렇게, 맥스2집과 시작된 나의 음악여행. 이후 시작된 팝에 대한 갈증. 힙합, R&B, 소울, 펑크, 레게, 포크로 이어지는 새로운 음악세계.
이후 나의 음악여정은 줄곧 마이클잭슨Michael Jackson으로 향해 있다. 영원한 팝의 황제 King of Pop. 내 귀를 200% 만족시켜주는 건 여전히 엠제이MJ 당신 하나뿐.
